I just woke up one day and decided it’s time! It’s time to publish my songs! I’m an indie songwriter, living in San Francisco, who is self-publishing songs that I’ve recorded with talented musicians from around the SF Bay Area. My music has it’s roots in mainstream jazz, but it has my unique personal stamp on it. I didn’t reinvent the wheel, I just let the wheel roll into a new landscape. My lyrics are seldom “regular love songs”, they are stories about various characters, their lives, and their situations. The songs I’ve written are general mix of traditional swing, California bossa nova, and occasional ballads. Keeping it simple, with piano, upright bass, and drums, gives my songs a traditional and wholesome sound.
With a pen in hand, I head for the forest and the mountains, to find a beautiful place to sit and write. That’s where I feel at home. Being surrounded by the beauty of Northern California easily gets me in a creative mood – it’s hard not to create when being surrounded by so much beauty.
Life is like the weather – sometimes there is sunshine, sometimes there is rain. And there is beauty in all of it. I’m willing to experience any kind of weather when I’m outdoors, and I write about all of it. It’s a matter of finding the right combinations of major and minor chords. The power of a storm can transform you, but also the slight wind puff that barely moves a blade of grass can be just as transformative, if you open yourself to it and let it move you. This is my general approach to songwriting. Writing about the sunshine and about the rain, are equally important.
When growing up, I would listen to Al Jarreau and Steely Dan while eating breakfast before going to school. One thing I learned then, was that song lyrics shouldn’t be kept to a certain formula – you can write about anything.
Let me know what you think:
